BackGround and Introduction
Wind Over Water Counseling Center is a mental health organization located in Norfolk Virginia run by a woman named Kendra Wilson. Kendra works for many different companies and organizations to provide her services but she also works independently through her own company. She specializes in eating disorders and other mental illnesses, and has over twenty years of experience of being a psychiatrist. Kendra emphasizes “As a therapist & as a person, I put being genuine and straightforward above what type of therapeutic approach I use or what diagnosis my client might have”. I want to organize a music festival to donate proceeds to this organization to bring better mental health help to Norfolk, Virginia.
SWOT Analysis
Strengths:
Audience. Our audience for music is huge in Norfolk. We have a lot of diversity in our city but one thing we all have in common that we enjoy is music. Being able to market this to everyone to come out and listen to music for a good cause will be a no-brainer.
Our vision. Our vision is to get as many people to this music festival to raise money but to also bring awareness to mental health. The cost of our tickets to the festival will be partially donated to the Wind Over Water Counseling Center to bring them more tools to better the community in Norfolk.
Our reputation. The reputation for Kendra and her mental health company is superb. Many big companies bring her in to work with either their patients or employees, she has great reviews and accolades.
Weaknesses:
This mental health organization is not known by everyone. It is local to Norfolk so that is a great opportunity to branch and learn about the resources you have in your community. That being said, it is hard to turn this small local organization into a huge event for the city. If this was a music festival just for Sentara Hospital it could be bigger but then we lose the pinpoint of promoting mental health.
Resources. In Norfolk there is not much space to put on a huge festival like Coachella. That being said, we need to find space that could have two big stages and one small stage. We have plenty of popular artists and bands that are from Virginia and would most likely be able to perform at this festival.
We can withstand negative forces besides one. Since our city has a high crime rate there might be violence and due to the highly populated festival the ratio of security to people will not be great. If we have a good security to get into the festival it should decrease the crimes. We will also need permits to have this festival.
Opportunities:
This festival will be beneficial for the community and its economy. This will bring in tourists and local businesses and restaurants will get more attention than ever. This will also bring more attention to our city and make people want to return.
The regulatory environment that is shifting is that where the festival will be held will block off a few main roads in the city. This is a great opportunity for change and to also get people excited to go to an event like this and to also bring in something different to Norfolk.
This event will also create more job opportunities. Since festivals and music shows use a lot of technology, props, and also food trucks/drinks we need people to help set up, clean up, and work the festival itself.
Threats:
Weather. Weather is a huge threat to this event. Since this is something that is not in our control we have to be prepared for it. That means we need to make sure we have ponchos stocked up for sale and to also make sure that each stage is covered for rain but covered so they can keep performing. The show must go in if it is only raining because a big event like this cannot be postponed.
Artstist drop out. This is a threat because popular artists tend to drop out last minute or come to the event extremely late. Since they are celebrities they can technically do whatever they want. This is a threat that any music event entails.
Volunteer and worker drop outs. This is an issue because we could end up understaffed if volunteers or employees decide not to show up. It is important that we hire more than enough people to work the event so that this problem doesn't occur but this is also hard to accommodate.
c. Event Recommendation
I would like to announce the music festival called “Mental Health Matters” hosted by Waterside District in Downtown Norfolk. The performers and music that will be played will mostly be pop and rap music. I chose this genre because this will bring in more young people and they are the money-makers. Pop and rap performers also have the biggest following of fans compared to other genres of music and that will bring in more people to the event. This music festival will be in support of mental health and the local organization “Wind Over Water Counseling Center” run by a woman named Kendra Wilson. Half of the proceeds from the event will go towards her organization and allow her to make her organization grow and bring in new tools to help more people with their mental health.
